First Methodist Church, San Jose, CA

June 7, 2017

As Methodism moved westward, streams of migration from North and South settled in major urban centers like Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and other places. So it’s nor unusual to find “First Methodist Episcopal Church” and “First Methodist Episcopal Church, South” in the same community — the legacy of a denomination split on the issue of slavery decades earlier. In San Jose, they distinguished themselves less contentiously with “First” and “St Paul” as designations. What I find more remarkable is the virtually identical organization of these two buildings — their massing and the way functional units are articulated — differ only in style; different fashions clad essentially identical bodies.
