Lawtonville Baptist Church, Estill, SC

June 7, 2017

Surely, I thought, this modest building has disappeared, replaced by something large and “colonial.” What a surprise to find it still in Estill and modified in sympathetic ways. It was built in 1911 from the design of Savannah architect Julian DeBruyn Kops and is on the National Register.

The former recessed entry has been expanded to the front edge of the steps to create a vestibule, though the elliptical arches have simply been brought forward. The NR nomination describes the sanctuary interior but I can make neither heads nor tails of its description [photographs were not included with the on-line nomination form. My guess is that the two flat-roofed parapetted extensions were “saddle bag” spaces for religious education.
