Methodist Episcopal Church, Joplin, MO

June 8, 2017

The spires do make a difference, don’t they. Joplin’s UMC was built in 1905, presumably with the single-story educational wing shown on the far right of the recent image. For such a large church in such a prominent city, it’s surprising that the architect’s name is missing.

  1. That the congregation has maintained their building for 112 years is to be commended, and certainly in Joplin, after the tornadoes of some years back, it’s amazing that the building is standing at all. The loss of the spire easily imaginable as a casualty of some storm over the life of the building. However, the conversion of the bell tower openings into billboards for the UMC logo makes me wince. It suggests there’s a cheap drum kit up next to the pulpit.
