Three in West Virginia

July 5, 2017

West Virginia is proving to be (or have been ) rich in A-A churches. These three in Mannington, Parkersburg and Bramwell are representative.

Mannington UMC sits on Clarksburg Street, just opposite the Middle School, a phenomenal Romanesque Revival pile that warrants a look. Parkersburg’s is identified here as Elburn M.E., though google names it St. Andrew’s UMC at the corner of St Mary’s Avenue and Elberon Place, showing how information can be lost in the production process. [Parkersburg boasts six Methodist churches in a half-mile radius, including one by George W. Kramer.] Bramwell’s M.E. church is in an area of complex jurisdiction — if only in the popular mind — which includes Bramwell, Bluestone and smaller hamlets. The building survives, however, as Elizabeth Bowen Jones Memorial UMC, in an area not yet covered by google.maps. They all date circa 1900-1910 and merit further investigation.
