Methodist Episcopal Church, Drayton, ND

July 24, 2017

The UMC church at Drayton, North Dakota is about half way between Grand forks and the Canadian border on the road to Winnipeg. I first saw this charming building about forty years ago, long before my passion for the A-A set in. Likewise, I had identified its architect. A. W. McCrea, Jr., a New York City architect with family ties to the region. McCrea must have been a Methodist, because he designed two Methodist colleges in these parts as well: the former Wesley college, now part of the University of North Dakota, and Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell, SD. The Drayton church sits about 100 yards from the river, which has flooded the area more often than it has not. So I suspect there are now some flood control measures quite close to the building.

It was built in 1905-1906.
