Christian Church, McAllen, TX

August 7, 2017

Highly unlikely as an A-A nominee, the former First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in McAllen, Texas is architecturally interesting and an historical conundrum.

This postcard view is currently on auction and I may not be the successful bidder (which is OK with me for the reason above). But I began looking into it anyway. The style, to my eye, has a 1910-ish quality, so I was surprised to learn from the congregation’s current website that its first building (presumably this one) was “erected in one day on February 17, 1917.” The McAllen Historic Preservation Commission has considered it for nomination at a recent meeting but admits there is little historical information about the building available to them. Erection of a building in one day seems sufficient grounds for nomination, if you ask me.
