Methodist Episcopal Church, Canastota, NY

August 12, 2017

Recommended to me by a frequent visitor to the blog, the UMC in Canastota, New York didn’t appear at first to have sufficient A-A characteristics. But a visit to the current website — it is now called Greystone Castle and serves as a wedding venue — includes a promotional video that hints at a genuine Akron Sunday school.

The shape of the building is interesting and that massive entrance tower is an eye catcher, but the stone pattern is too small and fussy for my taste; it looks more like embossed wallpaper than real granite.

  1. You’re right, the architect’s design for the stone work falls short of his picturesque objective. That said it probably wasn’t cheap and the other detailing is obviously high quality. I find on the OHS website the organ installed in 1913 was of only modest quality. They must have blown the budget on masonry ’cause they sure didn’t spend it on the organ.
