Calvary Baptist Church, Providence, RI

August 18, 2017

Tonight seems to be Sidney Rose Badgley’s. This is the second of his church I’m adding to the blog—though they’ve been in the database from the beginning.

Calvary Baptist Church in Providence, Rhode Island was built in 1897 and sports one of the architect’s signature details: a tall polygonal lantern clad in copper. Lanterns were popular with both Badgley and Cincinnati architects Brown & Davis. It may be overconfidence on my part, but it seems to me that Badgley’s are thinner, more needle-like than those by B&D.

  1. A substantial budget is suggested by the building’s quality, yet a bit of Yankee frugality seems to have crept in later, as they bought very large, high quality, but second-hand, pipe organ in 1907 – 10 years after the building was completed.
