Methodist Episcopal Church, Rockwell City, IA

August 24, 2017

Yes, I know the caption on the card identifies this as St Paul’s Lutheran church. But the building began its life as a Methodist Episcopal facility. Apparently the Protestant tide in Rockwell City has shifted.

This is a type that I associate with Minneapolis architect Harry W. Jones (who was probably deceased when this was built): Jones often placed a common entry vestibule (and bell tower) at the junction between the auditorium and Sunday school. And that tower just as often divides the building in a 2/3—1/3 ratio. Do we actually have to be inside a=to imagine the children on the right looking toward the left, over their parents’ heads.
