Baptist Church, Brookings, SD

November 29, 2017

It’s always a treat to post an example of the A-A on the northern Plains, particularly Montana and the Dakotas. These were places where significant settlement occurred just as the A-A was invented: too early to have participated in the phenomenon, but ready for a second generation of church buildings just as the A-A had passed its popularity. So, with few exceptions, we missed it coming and going.

This Carpenter Gothic fantasy must have been replaced in the ‘teens (with a very orthodox brick Gothic Revival design, with no trace of Akron characteristics) and taken from the region one of the most picturesque churches I have eve seen in the Dakotas. There is no assurance of a connection between auditorium and Sunday school but I’m willing to give the benefit of doubt for the time being. In the meantime, wallow in its whimsy.
