Arthur Bates Jennings

Arthur Bates Jennings [1849–1927] had been on my radar, albeit off at the periphery, until a church of his showed up on New Jersey. Looking for some biographical material on him led to several others and a substantial file in the database. This Baptist church in Norfolk, Virginia is typical of his work on both sides of 1900:

That cylindrical Italianesque “campanile” is characteristic of his output, mostly Protestant and very often of the A-A sort. Not quite so elegant as this Early Christian example at Ravenna, but respectable nonetheless.
