Christian Church, Spencer, IA

January 22, 2018

Iowa has a number of crisply detailed churches, vaguely Classical Revival yet not. Sibley and Storm Lake are of this sort (if memory serves, which it often does not).

  1. There’s a not-nearly-detailed enough history on the church’s website here

It dates the brick, pseudo-classical building to just after WWi. Interestingly though, the predecessor building’s construction date is not given, but it does say in “1900 the interior of the church was remodeled, seating arrangement changed and other improvements made” and “in 1909 the church was again remodeled and the class rooms enclosed. Prior to this the church had been more or less one large room.” Sounds like an A-A arrangement of some sort!
