“Spanish Colonial”

October 2, 2018

Of the many architectural styles used for A-A churches, the Spanish Colonial interests me, not least because it can be found in places both “natural” for its presence and not. These two cards are up for auction this week: both are Methodist, one in Canby, Oregon and the other in Clearwater, Florida. The Spanish Colonial style makes sense in Florida and other place where there had or might still be a strong Spanish presence. And then there’s Canby, Oregon where it seems more a statement of fashion rather than culture.

RHLMR the Clearwater church on the postcard is by our favorite multi-tasker George W. Kramer,
the rendering in my files shows it reversed with the long side view emphasized. RWK
