Washington Park Church (M.E.), Providence, RI

October 4, 2018

This Methodist congregation began life as Edgewood M.E. church but changed its name some time before the turn of the century. When the building shown in this postcard postmarked 1906) was built isn’t certain; but an 1897 Providence directory places Washington Park M.E. at Alabama Street near Broad Street on the city’s south side. It is shown at that address today on google.maps, though a different building.

This may be one of those cases where the Sunday School was built first, in anticipation of an auditorium-sanctuary when funds were available; that single door is simply too small for a public building like this. I suspect the land to the left, which would have faced the more prominent Broad Street, is where that sanctuary was eventually built.
